Job Opening:  Americorps VISTA Fundraising & Communications Coordinator

Full-time, 1 year position

Start Date:  Summer 2020

The Mission of Transplanting Traditions Community Farm is to provide refugee adults and youth access to land, healthy food and agricultural and entrepreneurial opportunities. TTCF works with refugees that fled Burmas as a result of warfare and have resettled their lives in North Carolina.  All participants were farmers in Burma and the majority are women.  The farm provides a cultural community space for families to come together, build healthy communities and continue agricultural traditions in the Piedmont of N.C.

Summary:  Transplanting Traditions provides North Carolina, Triangle-based refugee adults and youth access to land, healthy food and agricultural and entrepreneurial opportunities. The Americorps VISTA Fundraising and Communication coordinator will work with the Transplanting Traditions Community staff, board and volunteers to build capacity to access long-term and diverse funding sources to help the organization flourish and continue to carry out the mission.  This will be achieved through the assessment of current funding strategies, facilitation and design of a funding plan, investigation and documentation of potential local funding partnerships, systematization and management tool creation, research and structural content development of funding proposals and coordination and training of direct funding solicitations and events. 

Potential VISTA candidates should demonstrate a deep commitment to justice and equity and have experience working with people from diverse cultures, ethnicities, races, religion, language, socioeconomic groups, and educational backgrounds. Due to the agricultural focus of the project, previous gardening and farming experience or knowledge is ideal. Strong communication skills are essential for success both written and oral communication as well as technical skills for website and social media management. Candidates are expected to have excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to multitask, and work both collaboratively and independently. Flexibility, adaptability, humility and openness to new situations and learning are necessary given the range of backgrounds of participants, staff, board and the small and emerging stage of the participating organizations.

Program Benefits: This position is a full-time, year long domestic volunteer service opportunity.  Americorps VISTA members are not employees, they are volunteers and therefore do not receive compensation for their service, however they do receive a living Allowance, health coverage, a relocation allowance, a choice of education award or end of service stipend. Transplanting Traditions is part of the Womens in Transition VISTA Initiative. The Women in Transition Initiative is a collaboration between Transplanting Traditions Community Farm, Benevolence Farm and AmeriCorps VISTA CNCS which focuses on employment and workforce development strategies through agricultural-based social enterprise programs as a tool for overcoming and preventing poverty. The proposed VISTA project will seek to ensure that North Carolina women facing major transitions (refugees, immigrants, formerly incarcerated and others) gain the educational and professional skills needed to improve their economic situation.
